Shelver

Kathy is a shelver at the Benton Branch of the Saline County Library. You can most often find her among the shelves standing on her tippy toes trying to position a book on the top shelf or you may see her crawling on the floor trying to read book labels on the very bottom shelf. Shelving demands a level of performance art she did not expect. In just the few weeks she has been a shelver she has learned that a day without Nora Roberts is like…never mind. There is never a day without Nora Roberts or Tom Clancy or James Patterson or…You get the idea.

Kathy spent 30+ years in the classroom. Most of that time was spent as a high school English teacher, but she also worked as a substitute teacher and a reading and writing tutor. She is now retired from teaching and methodically moving through the shelves and making an ever-extending reading list. When not shelving, she enjoys hiking the many trails Arkansas has to offer. She walks 4-5 miles nearly every day. Her favorite time of day is the early morning when most of the world is still asleep and she can quietly sip her coffee and read.

Because of her husband’s military career, she and her family frequently moved—11 moves in 25 years. Though all this moving left her feeling a bit like a tumbleweed, she is grateful for the people she met along the way and grateful for a wide world of experience.

I would like to be able to fly.

I enjoy watching birds and talking to them.

I don’t really have one.

I like both, but I’m more of a cat person.
