We’ve got the Rhythm!

Introducing a New Musical Storytime

Fridays in Benton

We always sing in storytime, and starting this month, we’ve created a special new storytime called Let’s Get the Rhythm, to work on our rhythm and singing skills and to play with instruments. In this lively and interactive storytime, we’ll hear stories and create accompanying music with shakers, rhythm sticks, drums, castanets and other instruments to practice early literacy and math skills in creative and musical new ways. This program is intended for ages 3-5, but everyone is welcome to join in on the fun at 10:30 on Friday mornings beginning January 12th in Benton.

So why do we sing so much? Songs help children develop listening skills and learn the rhythms and rhymes of spoken language. Singing slows down language so children can hear the different sounds that make up words and learn about syllables. Singing develops memory skills and makes repetition easier for young children.

Singing is a skill we practice a lot in the library, and we want you to practice, too! To make this easier, we’ve filmed some of our favorite songs from storytime to share with you. Check out our YouTube page because we’ll add more all the time!
