It’s officially spring and that means it’s time to start thinking about your garden!

Luckily for you, Robert Holt will be presenting a class on how to get started with Straw Bale Gardening, as well as some instructions on how to help your garden thrive. He will be at the Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library on Monday, April 8th at 6:30 PM and the Coronado Center Library in Hot Springs Village on Tuesday, April 30th at 1:30 PM. 

We talked to Robert Holt to get a brief overview of his experience with Straw Bale Gardening!

How did you get into straw bale gardening?

I have been doing straw bale gardening for 7 years.

What do you enjoy about straw bale gardening?

Straw bale gardening is unique; it does not require a lot of watering, weeding, or bending over.

What are the best plants to grow in straw bale gardens?

Tomatoes, peppers, squash, herbs, eggplants, dwarf okra, and many others.

What are the benefits of straw bale gardening?

You have better control of growing seasons and longer growing seasons.

Some other benefits include:

  • It’s essentially raised beds and “deep mulch”
  • It’s a solution for problem soil
  • It’s easy on the back and knees
  • It facilitates growing more in less space
  • It can be done on decks or patios
  • It reduces growing time for short growing seasons
  • It’s easier to tend – no need to till, hoe, or weed
  • It’s fun to try new gardening experiments!
